Tymna Kraum

Blue Farm, also known as Tymna/Kraum, is a powerful, flexible archetype in the cEDH metagame. It combines turbo and midrange strategies, leveraging efficient mana acceleration, high-impact cards, and the card advantage provided by its commanders: [[Tymna the Weaver]] and [[Kraum, Ludevic’s Opus]].

Blue Farm is well-suited for various pod compositions, capable of executing fast wins or pivoting into value-based gameplay. While typically aiming to close games between turns 3-5, the deck performs admirably in grindy scenarios, often leveraging Underworld Breach or Thassa’s Oracle combos to secure victory.

Deck Advantages & Challenges

Pros

  • High Card Quality: Features the best cards across five colors.

  • Resilient to Stax: Draw engines like [[Tymna the Weaver]], [[Kraum, Ludevic's Opus]], and [[Rhystic Study]] ensure card flow even under resource denial.

  • Flexible Gameplan: Can adapt to turbo or grindy metas.

  • No Bad Matchups: Competitive against both turbo and midrange opponents.

Cons

  • Life Total Pressure: Reliance on [[Tymna the Weaver]] and [[Ad Nauseam]] can limit your margin for error.

  • High Threat Level: Often the pod's archenemy, requiring careful piloting and diplomacy.

  • Synergy-light: Prioritizes individual card strength over cohesive interactions.

Gameplan and Strategy

Blue Farm focuses on value accumulation and efficient resource use. Your primary objectives include:

Early Game: Develop Advantage

  • Aim to establish a draw engine ([[Rhystic Study]], [[Mystic Remora]], [[Tymna the Weaver]], or [[Kraum, Ludevic’s Opus]]) as quickly as possible.

  • Deploy fast mana and ramp to cast impactful spells or your commanders early.

  • Mulligan Aggressively for hands that enable turn 1 or 2 development.

Midgame: Identify Windows

  • Leverage the card advantage gained from draw engines to sculpt a winning hand.

  • Use tutors ([[Demonic Tutor]], [[Intuition]], [[Diabolic Intent]]) to find win conditions or critical interaction.

  • Protect key pieces with counterspells or Silence effects.

Endgame: Execute Combos

  • Identify the ideal moment to transition into combo mode. Look for windows where opponents are tapped out or lack resources to respond.

  • Use redundancy in win conditions to adapt your line based on available cards and the game state.

Commanders

[[Tymna the Weaver]]

Tymna offers consistent card draw through combat, particularly effective with small utility creatures like [[Orcish Bowmasters]], [[Esper Sentinel]], or [[Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer]]. Pair Tymna with evasive creatures to maximize her draw potential.

[[Kraum, Ludevic’s Opus]]

Kraum punishes opponents for overextending, providing incidental card draw and a solid blocker. His flying and haste make him a great Tymna partner, and he can close games via combat damage in grindy scenarios.

Mulligan Guide

Blue Farm demands hands that provide fast mana, early interaction, or a draw engine. Prioritize hands with:

  1. Turn 1/2 Draw Engines: [[Rhystic Study]], [[Mystic Remora]], or [[Esper Sentinel]].

  2. Turbo Hands: Hands capable of producing 7+ mana for an early win attempt with [[Ad Nauseam]] or [[Underworld Breach]].

  3. Interaction & Ramp: Cards like [[Force of Will]], [[Silence]], and fast mana ([[Mox Diamond]], [[Chrome Mox]]) are essential to keep pace.

Payoffs

  1. [[Ad Nauseam]]: Convert life total into card advantage, finding fast mana and a win condition to close the game.

  1. [[Underworld Breach]]: Use your graveyard to assemble [[Brain Freeze]] + [[Lion’s Eye Diamond]] to combo off and win the game.

  2. [[Wheel of Fortune]]: Wheel early to “force mulligan” your opponents or with a lot of extra mana to find a win.

  3. [[Mnemonic Betrayal]]: Leverage opponents’ graveyards to win.

Combos

[[Underworld Breach]] + [[Brain Freeze]] + [[Lion’s Eye Diamond]]

  1. Cast [[Underworld Breach]] (requires [[symbol:1]] [[symbol:r]]).

  2. Cast [[Lion’s Eye Diamond]] and sacrifice it for [[symbol:u]] [[symbol:u]] [[symbol:u]].

  3. Escape [[Brain Freeze]] targeting yourself to mill your deck.

  4. Continue looping [[Lion’s Eye Diamond]] and [[Brain Freeze]] until you mill your library win with [[Thassa’s Oracle]] or deck your opponents with [[Brain Freeze]].

[[Thassa’s Oracle]] + [[Demonic Consultation]] or [[Tainted Pact]]

  1. Cast [[Thassa’s Oracle]] ([[symbol:1]] [[symbol:u]]).

  2. Respond to the ETB trigger with [[Demonic Consultation]] ([[symbol:b]]) or [[Tainted Pact]] ([[symbol:1]] [[symbol:b]]).

  3. Exile your library to win.

Things to keep in mind when winning with [[Thassa's Oracle]]:

    • If you have an [[Esper Sentinel]] or [[Kraum, Ludevic's Opus]] in play, your opponents can cast spells to force you to draw from an empty library with the [[Thassa's Oracle]] trigger on the stack. Make sure to remove these creature's before comboing or leave a couple of cards in your library with [[Tainted Pact]].

    • Removing [[Thassa's Oracle]] before the trigger resolves does not stop your win if you have an empty library even if you have 0 devotion to blue because your devotion must "greater than or equal to the number of cards in your library"

    • If you think your opponents don't have a creature counterspell you can cast [[Demonic Consultation]] or [[Tainted Pact]] before [[Thassa's Oracle]] to trick them into not countering the spell. This is more dangerous, however, because if they counter your [[Thassa's Oracle]] you'll have no library and lose the game on your next turn.

[[Necropotence]]

[[Necropotence]] functions as potent engine that can consistently convert life into a game-winning resource advantage. With strategic use of extra-turn spells like [[Final Fortune]] or instant-speed enablers such as [[Borne Upon a Wind]] and [[Valley Floodcaller]], Necro enables explosive turns to close out the game. The following outlines how to leverage these cards for 1-turn and 2-turn win scenarios.

General Guidelines

  • Life Total Management:
When activating [[Necropotence]], determine your target card count based on your current resources and life total. Typically, this is 7 - 15 cards if you don’t have enough mana remaining to cast an extra turn spell or instant speed enabler, and 30+ cards if you do.

  • Prioritize Mana and Protection:
Focus on fast mana (e.g., [[Rite of Flame]], [[Lotus Petal]], [[Mox Opal]]) to fuel combos and counterspells ([[Pact of Negation]], [[Force of Will]]) for protection.

  • Identify Your Win Condition:
Use instant-speed tools ([[Tainted Pact]], [[Demonic Consultation]], instant-speed tutors) to find and resolve enablers like [[Final Fortune]] or [[Borne Upon a Wind]].

1-Turn Win Line

Objective: Leverage leftover mana after casting [[Necropotence]] to win during the same end step.

Play Sequence

  1. Cast [[Necropotence]]:
Ensure you leave enough mana to cast [[Borne Upon a Wind]] ([[symbol:1]][[symbol:u]])., [[Valley Floodcaller]] ([[symbol:2]][[symbol:u]]), or [[Final Fortune]] ([[symbol:r]][[symbol:r]]).

  2. Exile Cards:
Pay life to exile as many cards as possible. The exact number depends on how much life you intent to pay to win the game (i.e. [[Force of Will]], [[Talisman of Dominance]], [[Mental Misstep]]).

  3. Move to End Step:
During your end step, [[Necropotence]] will place the exiled cards into your hand.

  4. Find and Resolve an Enabler:

    • Use instant-speed effects like [[Borne Upon a Wind]] or [[Final Fortune]] to take another turn without passing priority.

    • If needed, cast [[Tainted Pact]] or [[Demonic Consultation]] to find your enabler.

  5. Win:
With your extra turn secured, use your newly drawn resources to assemble and execute a winning line (e.g., [[Underworld Breach]] combo, [[Thassa’s Oracle]] with [[Demonic Consultation]]).

2-Turn Win Line

Objective: Use the first turn to set up resources and protect your position, then win on the following turn.

Play Sequence

  1. Turn 1: Cast [[Necropotence]]:

    • Prioritize resolving the engine early.

    • Pay life to exile between 7 and 15 cards, focusing on finding fast mana, counterspell protection, and extra-turn enablers for the next turn.

  2. End Step:

    • On your end step, [[Necropotence]] will refill your hand with exiled cards.

  3. Turn 2: Play Mana and Combo Off:

    • Deploy your resources to play mana rocks, rituals, or other accelerants.

    • Pay life again to exile as many cards as possible, leaving yourself between 1 - 5 life.

    • Move to the end step and use instant-speed enablers like [[Borne Upon a Wind]] or [[Final Fortune]] to seize the next turn or win in the end step.

  4. Win:

    • Use your extra turn to deploy a win condition, leveraging fast mana and cards drawn from the second activation.

Win Conditions

  1. [[Thassa’s Oracle]]: Win with an empty library.

  2. [[Brain Freeze]]: Mill opponents’ libraries under [[Underworld Breach]].

  3. [[Mnemonic Betrayal]]: Leverage opponents’ graveyards to win.

  4. Combat Damage: Close games with [[Kraum, Ludevic's Opus]], [[Orcish Bowmasters]], or other creatures.

Pivoting Between Plans

Turbo

Leverage explosive mana and tutors to execute fast combos. [[Ad Nauseam]] and [[Necropotence]] are your primary tools in this approach.

Midrange

Deploy commanders and draw engines to grind opponents out. Use high-quality interaction to protect your board and dismantle opposing plans.

Conclusion

Blue Farm exemplifies the versatility of cEDH, offering both turbo-speed wins and a robust midrange fallback plan. Whether dominating early turns with powerful combos or grinding value over time, Tymna/Kraum remains a top-tier choice for competitive players. With practice and precise piloting, Blue Farm can consistently adapt to any pod or meta, securing its place as a cEDH staple.
