Terra

[[Terra, Magical Adept]] leads a five-color [[symbol:w]][[symbol:u]][[symbol:b]][[symbol:r]][[symbol:g]] combo deck that can play turbo or midrange. Terra costs [[symbol:1]][[symbol:r]][[symbol:g]], and her back face gives her a five-color identity. When she enters, you mill five cards and may put an enchantment from among them into your hand. The deck wins with an [[Underworld Breach]] loop or [[Thassa's Oracle]], usually after a big [[Necropotence]] or [[Ad Nauseam]].

Core Gameplan

Develop mana and a draw engine, then use [[Terra, Magical Adept]] to look for an enchantment and stock the graveyard. The enchantment you take should fit the hand: more cards when you need to rebuild, or [[Underworld Breach]] when you can use it to win.

Terra only recovers an enchantment from the five cards she just milled. Plan separate access to anything important already in the graveyard, and keep interaction available while setting up a larger draw or combo turn.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Five Colors for Three Mana: Terra gives access to all five colors while costing only [[symbol:1]][[symbol:r]][[symbol:g]] to cast.

  • Enchantment Selection: Terra digs five cards deep for an enchantment, and most of yours are draw engines or [[Underworld Breach]]. The cards she mills pay for Breach's escape costs.

  • Protected Turns: [[Silence]] and [[Voice of Victory]] stop opponents from casting spells on your combo turn.

  • Cheap Interaction: [[Force of Will]], [[Pact of Negation]] and [[Mental Misstep]] can cost no mana, and [[Flusterstorm]] costs [[symbol:u]], so you can stop an opposing combo with little or no mana up.

Weaknesses

  • Limited Repeatable Value: Terra's enter trigger is most of her value. Her Trance ability ([[symbol:4]][[symbol:r]][[symbol:g]], tap, sorcery speed) is a slow six-mana play outside the [[Mirrormade]] combo.

  • Graveyard Hate: [[Rest in Peace]] or [[Grafdigger's Cage]] shuts off Breach, so you need [[Thassa's Oracle]] or another line that doesn't use the graveyard while one is out.

  • Missed Enchantments: Terra can miss an enchantment or mill a spell you needed in hand, such as [[Thassa's Oracle]] or [[Demonic Consultation]].

Core Combos

Underworld Breach Lines

[[Underworld Breach]] + [[Lion's Eye Diamond]] + [[Brain Freeze]]

  1. Requirements: Underworld Breach in hand, Lion's Eye Diamond and Brain Freeze in hand or graveyard, [[symbol:1]][[symbol:r]] to cast Breach in your main phase, and six expendable cards between hand and graveyard. If LED starts in the graveyard, you need nine expendable cards in total, at least three of them already in the graveyard for its first escape. Do not count the combo pieces or cards reserved for the finish as fuel. These are starting requirements for the order below; later escapes need fuel from your self-mill.

    1. Cast [[Underworld Breach]], then cast [[Lion's Eye Diamond]] or escape it by exiling three other cards.

    2. Discard your hand and sacrifice LED for [[symbol:u]][[symbol:u]][[symbol:u]]. Brain Freeze must now be in your graveyard.

    3. Escape LED for [[symbol:0]], exiling three other cards. Let it resolve.

    4. Escape [[Brain Freeze]] for [[symbol:1]][[symbol:u]], exiling three other cards. Aim enough copies at yourself to supply the next escape costs; each copy mills three cards.

    5. Repeat steps 2 - 4 while you have the fuel. Each pass leaves one more [[symbol:u]] and adds two spells to the storm count. Split later copies between yourself and your opponents as needed.

    6. Use enough Brain Freeze copies on each opponent to mill their remaining library.

Optional Oracle finish: If your list runs [[Thassa's Oracle]], you can instead mill your own library, keep Oracle and three other graveyard cards out of escape payments, and reserve [[symbol:u]][[symbol:u]] to escape it. Sacrifice the battlefield LED for blue before casting Oracle if needed. Let its enter trigger resolve with an empty library to win.

Note: This is a finite graveyard-fuel sequence, not an unlimited mana loop. Milling opponents does not make them lose until they try to draw. [[Necropotence]] can exile your discarded fuel before you can escape LED; graveyard hate, spell limits and forced draws also change the line.

Thassa's Oracle Lines

[[Thassa's Oracle]] + [[Demonic Consultation]] or [[Tainted Pact]]

  1. Requirements: Thassa's Oracle and Demonic Consultation or Tainted Pact in hand, with [[symbol:u]][[symbol:u]] plus [[symbol:b]] for Consultation or [[symbol:1]][[symbol:b]] for Pact.

    1. Cast Thassa's Oracle ([[symbol:u]][[symbol:u]]).

    2. With its trigger on the stack, cast [[Demonic Consultation]]. As it resolves, name a card that isn't in your library. It exiles your library.

    3. Or cast [[Tainted Pact]] and decline to put any exiled card into your hand. It empties your library if the remaining cards all have different names.

    4. Let the Thassa's Oracle trigger resolve to win the game.

Note: After your library is empty but before Oracle's trigger resolves, an opponent can trigger your own [[Esper Sentinel]] with their first noncreature spell that turn and decline to pay. You then draw from your empty library and lose. Removing Sentinel after it triggers does not remove the pending draw.

Infinite Mana Combos

[[Food Chain]] + [[Squee, the Immortal]]

  1. Requirements: Food Chain and Squee on the battlefield, with [[Purphoros, God of the Forge]] in hand for the kill.

    1. Exile Squee with Food Chain for [[symbol:r]][[symbol:r]][[symbol:r]][[symbol:r]]. Food Chain mana can only be spent on creature spells.

    2. Cast Squee from exile ([[symbol:1]][[symbol:r]][[symbol:r]]), leaving [[symbol:r]] floating.

    3. Repeat steps 1 - 2 to create [[symbol:infinity-r]] for creature spells.

    4. Cast Purphoros ([[symbol:3]][[symbol:r]]) with that mana. It's a creature spell on the stack, so Food Chain mana can pay for it.

    5. Repeat steps 1 - 2. Each time Squee enters, Purphoros deals 2 damage to each opponent.

Note: Without Purphoros in hand, exile Terra with Food Chain, move her to the command zone and recast her (take some activations in green). Each time she enters, you mill five cards and may take Purphoros if it is among those cards. This only finds him while he remains in the library; Terra cannot recover a Purphoros already in the graveyard.

[[Terra, Magical Adept]] + [[Mirrormade]]

  1. Requirements: own and control an untapped Terra that you have controlled since your turn began, or that has haste. Control Mirrormade on the battlefield without copying anything, and have [[symbol:4]][[symbol:r]][[symbol:g]] with priority and an empty stack in your main phase. This makes unrestricted mana; [[Purphoros, God of the Forge]] under your control turns the token enters into damage.

    1. In your main phase, activate Terra's Trance ability ([[symbol:4]][[symbol:r]][[symbol:g]], tap Terra). She returns transformed as Esper Terra with one lore counter.

    2. Esper Terra's chapter I trigger makes a token copy of Mirrormade. Have the token enter as a copy of Esper Terra, and put three more lore counters on it, so its chapters I, II, III and IV all trigger.

    3. Keep the original Esper Terra for the legend rule and put the token into the graveyard. Its waiting chapter triggers are then put on the stack. Target the unchanged Mirrormade with chapters I, II and III; put chapter IV above them.

    4. Resolve the token's chapter IV for [[symbol:w]][[symbol:w]][[symbol:u]][[symbol:u]][[symbol:b]][[symbol:b]][[symbol:r]][[symbol:r]][[symbol:g]][[symbol:g]]. It adds the mana before attempting to exile and return its source. The token is already gone, so it does not return.

    5. Resolve one copy trigger, making another Esper Terra token as in step 2. Repeat for a chosen finite amount of mana or enter triggers. Each repetition leaves two additional copy triggers pending. If you control Purphoros, resolve its damage triggers each time.

    6. To stop, let the remaining copy triggers make plain Mirrormade tokens and decline their copy replacement effect. They are not Sagas, so they create no new chapter triggers. Once the stack is empty, cast your payoff before leaving the main phase and losing the floating mana.

Note: [[Copy Enchantment]] works the same way as Mirrormade.

Win Conditions

  1. [[Brain Freeze]]

    • Under [[Underworld Breach]], escape Brain Freeze with a high storm count targeting your opponents to mill their libraries. They lose when they try to draw from an empty library. Passing the turn can finish the game, but an opponent who skips their draw step, such as with [[Necropotence]], may survive. Reshuffle effects and draw replacements can also prevent the finish. If your list runs [[Faerie Mastermind]], get it onto the battlefield and pay [[symbol:3]][[symbol:u]] to make everyone draw immediately. Keep enough cards in your own library for your draws, including any draw needed to find Mastermind; its activation makes you draw too.

  2. [[Thassa's Oracle]]

    • Cast Thassa's Oracle, then empty your library with [[Demonic Consultation]] or [[Tainted Pact]] while its enter trigger waits. Alternatively, self-mill with Breach and escape Oracle afterward. Resolve the enter trigger to win.

  3. [[Purphoros, God of the Forge]]

    • In the lists that run it, Purphoros turns the [[Food Chain]] + [[Squee, the Immortal]] or [[Mirrormade]] loop into 2 damage to each opponent for every creature that enters.

Tips for Playing Terra

  • Mulligan: Keep fast mana plus a draw engine, or hands that cast Terra on turn two. [[Necropotence]] plus the black mana to cast it early (such as [[Dark Ritual]]) can be a strong start if the rest of the hand supplies a way to use the cards or protect the play. Ship hands that do nothing before turn three.

  • Pick the Right Enchantment: Early, take a draw engine off Terra's mill. Later in the game, take [[Underworld Breach]] or Necropotence.

  • Plan the Wishclaw Handoff: An opponent gains control of [[Wishclaw Talisman]] after you use it and can tutor with it on their turn. Prefer a tutor target you can use immediately, and account for the recipient's next opportunity.

Conclusion

Practice the Breach line with the cards actually left in your graveyard. Terra's mill helps supply fuel, but you still need to preserve the win card and pay every escape cost.
